Learn how to break up a fight – Here are some
helpful hints:
a. When you
see the fight break out, try to quickly find another adult to help you break up
the fight.
b. If you
cannot find another adult, send a trusted student to get help.
c. When you
get to the fight, verbally tell the students to stop fighting. I know this is hard to believe, but most of
the time they will stop! My two favorite
commands are “Hey! Knock it off!”…or
“Hey! Cut it out!”
d. If the
students don’t stop, figure out who is winning the fight and focus your efforts
on neutralizing him/her. At this point,
one of two scenarios will play out:
i. Once you
remove the aggressor, the other fighter will escape. You can track the student down later once the
fight has been stopped.
ii. Once you remove the aggressor, the other fighter will try to get at you and the aggressor. At this point, it is hoped that another adult or student will intervene to help you. If not, move to neutralize the student.
