4.      Do not mention your Facebook/MySpace/Twitter account in class.  If you don’t bring it up, it is likely that students will not bring it up either.  Once you bring up your online identity, students will inundate you with requests to be their online friend.  I never advocate lying to students, but this would be a situation in which lying would almost be acceptable…if a student asks you if you have a Facebook/MySpace/Twitter account, tell them “no”.  If you have a problem with lying, just tell the student respectfully that your personal information is none of their business.
