Students will engage in FST for many reasons
(to fit in, boredom, communication, etc.), but one student will continue
flicking, slapping, tapping, and poking long after the other student has
expressed the desire to stop. At this
point, the relationship moves from one of “play” to one of “bullying”. The bully may even increase the intensity of
the physical contact because they think they have established “dominance” over
the other student.
The
student then goes home and tells their parents that they are being pushed, hit,
and otherwise tormented…while conveniently leaving out the part of the story
where THEY were pushing, poking, and slapping.
Enraged parents call the school to complain that “nothing is being done”
to stop their child from being bullied.
The best first step is not to engage in Flickety Slappy-Tap to begin
with.
