I have sent about 4,400 e-mails
announcing my website to education professors from 51 colleges and
universities. You go fishing. You bait
the hook. You put your pole in the water and you wait. My pole wiggled. I opened up my e-mail two weeks ago and I had
a response from Dr. Douglas Brooks at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. This is
the same Douglas Brooks who did ground breaking research on the novice and
expert teacher behavior on first days of school. This is the same Douglas Brooks who is
constantly referenced by Harry Wong in his “First Days of School” book and
presentations to teachers all over the country. We talked to each other and I
discovered that he not only writes about successful classroom management
techniques, but he has developed a system for writing successful grant
applications that he calls GrantSuccess. He has helped school districts
successfully apply for over $10,000,000 in technology integration funding using
his system. He writes about GrantSuccess. He teaches GrantSuccess to teachers and administrators trying to develop
district grant writing capacity. He has developed an online course for Ohio
educators on GrantSuccess. He has agreed to make GrantSuccess available to our readers in a series of columns that
describe what he does and how he does it.
His most recent success was a $183,000 grant written in one week
(including the Thanksgiving break) using his system. His first column appears on the website
starting today. We hope you enjoy his
creative approach to applying for external funds that help your districts
achieve their academic and technology integration goals. We will put a new column of his on our site
every two weeks.
