Sex
– The topic of sex should never be used in your classroom, unless it is part of
your curriculum (like Health class or Biology).
The trap that teachers fall into is thinking that they can be the person
that helps students refrain from underage sexual activity based on something
they discussed in class. Just so you
know…this NEVER happens!! The potential
for disaster is so great, and the potential for good is so small that a teacher
should never discuss sex in the classroom.
An even bigger mistake is the old “I engaged in sex before I was ready,
and it led to many hardships, pain, suffering…so I say to you, don’t make the
same mistake I did!!” speech. I can
guarantee you that the only thing the students heard was “I engaged in underage
sex.” When they get caught having sex,
their reply will be, “Mr. Jones told us in class that he had sex when he was in
high school, too!” At that point, your
goose is cooked.
