In the last few years,
social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter have exploded in
popularity. I have no doubt that almost
all of you have either a MySpace or Facebook account (or both), and most of you
have a Twitter account. This makes your
thoughts, feelings, leisure time activities, and pictures available to millions
of people on the internet. Yes, I know
that you have your privacy settings on the highest level…your students will
still find a way to access those pictures from your junior year of
college. You know…the trip you and your
sorority sisters took to
1.
Do not become “friends” with any of your
students for any reason.
2.
Do not post
overly personal or revealing pictures or events on your Facebook/MySpace
page.
3.
Do not use
your Facebook/MySpace/Twitter page to “vent” about your job, your students, or
the way your school is run.
4.
Do not
mention your Facebook/MySpace/Twitter account in class.
5.
I have read
several articles recently that spotlight teachers who have their entire 5th
period class on Facebook, and they are discussing novels and parts of speech,
and Mr. Peabody’s 7th period Science class is listing
characteristics of elements in the periodic table, and everyone is saying how
innovative they are…how they are thinking “outside the box”.
6.
Live in the
virtual world with an “alias”.
7. The best thing to do is to not have a Facebook/MySpace/Twitter account.
