Studious Relationships

3.      Student Relationships – Students will come to you with stories about how their boyfriend/girlfriend mistreated them, or how their friend’s boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating on them, and other nuggets of information.  They will probably want advice from you because they see you as wise and knowledgeable in matters of the heart.  They respect you, and value your opinion.  Don’t fall for it!  You will try to help by giving advice, and that advice will come back to haunt you.  A girlfriend and boyfriend will get into a fight, and the boy will tell the girl, “Oh yeah?  Well I told Mr. Jones our story and he told me you were no good, and that I should have broken up with you a month ago.”  What you really said was “If someone is unfaithful to you, that person doesn’t value you, and you should end the relationship.”  In reality, it doesn’t matter what you said.  You shouldn’t involve yourselves in your student’s personal affairs (pun intended).  When a student comes to you for advice, refer them to the counselor, their friends, or their parents.  Just tell them that nothing good comes from involving yourself in other people’s business.
