6. Technological
Literacy – You are what is known as a “Digital Native”, which means that you
have no issues with any of the technology that is available today. You know what a “cloud” is.You can build a spreadsheet, construct a
website, make a powerpoint presentation, imbed hyperlinks and video clips in
your blog, and do pretty much anything else that is required. Most people over 30 are known as “Digital
Immigrants”, and simply do not get how to use technology.I have several teachers in my building that
cannot even email, send a text message, or use our district’s grade
program. Not only can they not learn how
to operate a computer program, they become belligerent and refuse to try to
learn.I understand that they are
frustrated, but they should realize that technology is not going to go away
just because they ignore it.It is here
to stay!
Use your tech knowledge to your
advantage by offering to help anyone in your building who is technologically
illiterate…you will score points with your elderly colleagues!Just make sure that you don’t help them with
an “I’m Smarter Than You” attitude. They
may show their appreciation by helping you out with things you have trouble
with, like lesson planning, discipline, or clearing paper jams out of the
photocopier!
One more thing...I can't believe I am giving away this secret, but you need to know: Teachers who publish their own websites NEVER update them. The teacher will bask in the glory of telling the administration about his website, and put his lessons on there, and homework assignments and their due dates...for about two months or so. Go to his website now, and you'll see the project that was due in October, 2007. Do you know how to score major points as a new teacher? Publish your website, and update it weekly.
