7.      The Manicurist – You will have students who think class time is the perfect opportunity to work on their physical appearance.  She will brush her hair, put it up into a “hair band” or hair clip…maybe even braid it.  When she is finished, she will take it out of that style to put it in another style, or maybe even put it back into the same style again.  How about her nails?  Should they be neglected?  She will file them, push back her cuticles, maybe even put on a coat or two of polish!  Lip gloss?  You bet!  What you can do:  Let The Manicurist know that her activity disrupts the other members of the class, and also keeps her from learning your material.  Tell her that she will have plenty of time to go to beautician school after she graduates from high school.  Tell her parents that you will have to keep her purse locked in your desk during class time if she doesn’t shift her focus to academics.
