Let students know that touching another student – for any reason –
is not acceptable. Your motto should be
“If it is not yours…don’t touch it.”
This motto can also help you cut down on the amount of hugging/other PDA
in your school, as well as theft.
Students come to school lacking in social skills, and should not be
given the freedom to touch other students until they learn what constitutes
appropriate physical contact. If you let
Flickety Slappy-Tap take place in your school, it will quickly spread into a
school-wide problem.
Another
thing you can do is download the “rationale” I give to students I punish for
engaging in FST. The rationale is called
“Why is ‘We Were Just Playing Around’ Not a Satisfactory Excuse for
Horseplay?” This explains to students
(and parents) why it is not acceptable to engage in horseplay, and why the
school makes such a big deal out of it.
